Being on the brink of Certification in Digital Strategy and Communications Management from U of T, I decided to spend the Summer exploring new and interesting events in the City (and beyond). And the Up-Start! Competition at MaRS on May 18th was no exception! The event is a business pitch competition for participants in the Entrepreneurship 101 lecture series at MaRS.

After meeting all eligibility criteria and submitting an application, 8 individuals (or teams) can compete with a 10-minute presentation on a business idea related to ICT, Cleantech, or Health, with eight presentations in total. It also has to be based on a business that they are already trying to launch.

Now, here’s the INTERESTING part factor…the winning presentation will receive $15, 000 courtesy of event and program sponsor, CIBC!

Unfortunately, that is about all I can tell you about the event, as all participants were required to sign an NDA (non-disclosure agreement)…

Comstruct takes home the gold

I can, however, let you know that this years winners were, dynamic Hons. Civil Engineering grads, Robert D’Ippolito and Luigi La Corte, who came up with an innovative an high tech software program, COMstruct, to spearhead the construction of commercial structures.

Past winners also include ShapeTraceLabs, Vessel Innovations, TrendyMED, MobileIV, LIFEbike, Revelo Bikes Inc., The Hot Plate and Shape Collage.

For more information on this program, check out the links above!

Until then, never hesitate to keep the ideas coming…
